The Iron Age Hill Fort on the Gog Magog Hills by Michelle Bullivant

Michelle Bullivant’s talk will explore the remains of this historic site. Perched atop Wandlebury Hill, a peak in the Gog Magog Hills, there is Iron Age hill fort, known as Wandlebury Ring, which stands as a testament to the enduring presence of human civilization in the region.

At 74 meters tall, Wandlebury Hill commands a commanding view of the surrounding landscape, serving as both a strategic vantage point and a place of cultural significance. The hill fort, inhabited during the Bronze Age and approximately 2500 years ago, once boasted concentric ditches and earthen walls fortified by wooden palisades.

Although the fort itself has vanished over time, the remnants of its defensive structures endure, with the ditch, known as the Ring, still visible today. Stretching along the edge of the hill, the Ring offers a glimpse into the fort's past, with sections reaching depths of 5 meters and providing an adventurous route for exploration.

Michelle's talk will uncover some of the mysteries of this area, shedding light on its significance in Iron Age society and offering insights into the lives of its ancient inhabitants.
